Replacement of boots of drum-type brake mechanisms

Replacement of boots of drum-type brake mechanisms should be made at the same time on both wheels - at all on one! Besides, it is necessary to pay attention that the dust developed by brake mechanisms in the course of their work can contain unhealthy asbestos. At all do not blow off a dust from surfaces of components of brake mechanisms the compressed air and do not inhale it. Works are best of all for making in a protective respiratory mask. At all do not use for cleaning of components of brake mechanisms solvents on an oil basis or gasolines - use only patent means for cleaning of brakes!


At the same time with boots surely it is necessary to change also clamping and returnable springs. Owing to cyclic thermal loadings to which springs continuously are exposed, later certain time they start to lose developed efforts that leads to a privolakivaniye of boots on drums and faster wear of working surfaces. At replacement of boots of brake mechanisms of back wheels use only the components patent and noted by a trademark approved to sale by local authorities.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Weaken nuts of fastening of back wheels, поддомкратьте a back of the car and establish it on props. Block forward wheels wedges in order to avoid a car otkatyvaniye.
  2. Release the parking brake.
  3. Remove a wheel and a brake drum (Head of Control and routine maintenance).

All four boots of both back brake mechanisms should change at the same time, however, in order to avoid a casual pereputyvaniye of details work with each of mechanisms serially. Besides, the second thus can serve as a model of the correct assembly in case of any doubts.

  1. For performance of procedures of check of a condition and replacement of brake boots follow the scheme presented on illustrations below. Try not to break an operations procedure and attentively get acquainted with explanations to pictures.

If the drum does not give in to removal from a pin of a semi-axis and bashmachny assembly (Head of Control and routine maintenance), make sure that the parking brake is completely released, then moisten a joint between a nave and a drum getting oil. Let's to oil time be absorbed, then repeat attempt of removal of a drum. If attempt appears again unsuccessful, it is necessary to compress brake boots. For this purpose at first it is necessary to take a stopper from a board of the brake mechanism. After removal of a stopper take away the lever from an adjusting gear castor by means of a narrow screw-driver, and the second narrow screw-driver turn a castor so that boots departed from walls of a brake drum (see an illustration). Now the drum should act in film freely.

  1. Before removal of any of components of the brake mechanism clean assembly by means of patent means and dry it - establish drain capacity under the brake mechanism for collecting washed-away dirt - AT ALL DO NOT BLOW OFF the BRAKE DUST the COMPRESSED AIR!
  1. Delay the lever of a regulator and turn an adjusting gear castor for branch of boots from drum walls.
  1. Delay back a cable of the device of self-regulation and push the regulator lever back, having unhooked it from a back boot of the brake mechanism.
  1. Remove from a basic finger returnable springs both (forward and back) boots - in a picture the tool for removal of springs (ask in shops of automobile accessories) which application allows to facilitate procedure performance essentially is shown.
  1. Remove from a basic finger a cable of a self-regulator and a finger plate.
  1. Disconnect from a back boot a returnable spring and directing a cable.
  1. Disconnect holding spring and a finger of a forward boot.

… then separate a forward boot and the adjusting screw from a brake board.

  1. Remove a strut of the parking brake.
  1. Remove holding and a finger of a back boot, then separate a boot from a board of the brake mechanism - having hooked the lever, remove a clip of the executive lever of the parking brake from an axial finger.

… then disconnect the lever from a back boot - try not to lose a spring washer.

  1. Grease contact surfaces of brake boots (arrow) with high-temperature greasing.
  1. Connect a new boot to the executive lever of the parking brake, establish a spring washer and a lock clip, having reduced its sponges by means of flat-nose pliers.
  1. Establish a back boot with a holding spring on a brake board, then place the end of a strut of the parking brake in reciprocal deepening (shooter).
  1. Grease the adjusting screw with high-temperature greasing.
  1. Press a forward boot to a brake board, then establish holding spring - track, that the rack of the parking brake and pushers of the wheel cylinder entered into gearing with cuts of boots.
  1. Establish a plate of a basic finger …

… and self-regulator cable.

  1. Pass the end of a returnable spring of a back boot through directing a cable, having hooked on it for an opening in a boot, then pull a spring, having fixed it on a basic finger.
  1. Establish a returnable spring of a forward boot - use of the special tool shown in a picture essentially will facilitate assembly (ask in shops of automobile accessories).
  1. Hook on a spring of the lever of a regulator for an opening from the lower part of a forward boot.
  1. Hook on a spring of the lever of a regulator and a cable for the lever and delay a cable down and back, having passed a lever hook in an opening in the second boot.
  1. Knock on assembly, achieving the correct centering it on a brake board.
  1. Before installation into place check a drum on existence of cracks, furrows, scratches and overheat signs (local change of coloring) its working surface. If defects cannot be restored by a way of processing by an emery paper, the drum should be delivered in a car-care center workshop for a pro-point.

Originators of this Management recommend to make a pro-point of drums regardless of their external condition each time at service of back brake mechanisms. If drums are worn-out so that cannot be restored by a pro-point way without excess of admissible repair diameter (it is stamped on a drum), it is necessary to replace them. As a last resort, if you prefer to do without a pro-point of drums, at least remove from their working surfaces polishing by means of an emery paper of the average size, making it on a working surface of a drum cyclic rotary motions.


The maximum admissible diameter of a drum is beaten usually out (or is cast) on its case.

  1. Establish a drum on a bridge flange. Remove rubber jams from brake boards.
  2. Pass in the formed opening in a board a narrow screw-driver or the adjusting tool and, turning a gear castor, achieve weak pressing of boots to a working surface of a drum.
  1. Pass a narrow screw-driver or the adjusting tool in an opening in a brake board and rotate a regulator castor as is shown in drawing, achieving weak pressing of boots to a working surface of a drum; then pass in an opening a narrow screw-driver, take away the regulator lever from a castor and turn it in the opposite direction exactly before release of boots (the boot should start to rotate freely).
  1. Turn a castor in the opposite direction exactly so that the drum started to rotate freely on an axis. For this purpose at first take away the regulator lever from a castor a screw-driver (differently it will not rotate).
  2. Repeat adjustment procedure for the second drum and establish to the place of a stopper of brake boards.
  3. Establish wheels and nuts of their fastening, then lower the car on the earth. Tighten nuts of fastening of wheels with demanded effort (Head of Control and routine maintenance).
  4. For final self-regulation of brake mechanisms make some braking of the car at its movement as to lobbies, and a backing. As a result of performance of this procedure adequate functioning of a pedal of a brake should be reached.
  5. Before starting operation of the car check serviceability of functioning of brakes.
